Many thanks to Sandhya Sasidharan for help with these names ... efloraofindia ... ഓണത്താര് onatharu, named so, because it flowers during the Onam festival season (August - September); വെള്ളംകുടി vellamkudi = that which drinks water, indicating the plant's succulent nature and is/was used by children to clean their slates
